My goal is to update with a better dial from Raffles / Helenrou or even Ruby based on a 2836 movement. I will build a medium budget 5513 which in my opinion will result in a pretty decent watch for the money. The base I am using is the ever popular JKF 5513 Submariner, sometimes referred as "Cartel". You can get one from any TD (I got mine from Puretime a couple of years ago, but Marvellous is the go to guy for such watch imo). I am starting with a 5513 clone from trustytime and would like to do a budget friendly build with it. What I had in mind was to swap the dg movement for a miyota, fit it with a higher quality dial and handset that I can lightly patina myself, and replace the crystal and bezel insert with higher quality parts if I can find them at reasonable cost. It's part of what makes vintage Rolex so much fun to collect. Last week a new website popped up dedicated entirely to picking apart the history of the reference 5513 matte dial Submariner, cataloging the many subtle changes in the matte 5513 over its nearly 20-year production history.

Age the dial and hands and choose whether or not to modify the bezel. Add a Tropic 19 crystal and an Athaya crown for a nice basic build. You're looking at around 400 dollars and labor for this (if you use a 2813 movement, higher if lo-beat ETA). My goal was simple, like a puzzle, to build a Rolex watch that was authentic and not a Frankenstein watch, one that would be all authentic with no fakes or aftermarket parts. This was a undertaking to do since what I wanted was a grail watch, a 5513. I got the JKF 5513 with 2813 movement from Marvelous Replicas for really cheap and absolutely loved it. I replaced the crystal with the Clark's T19 and aged the dial but messed it up. I ended up getting a whole new Viet dial and hands with custom matching lume, a gen NOS ETA 2840, and the ETA movement retaining ring for the case.

Ordered this JKF Rolex 5513 on Jan 4th from Marvelous Reps which is a TD on RWI that specializes in vintage reps. It cost 0 shipped which is amazing for what you are getting. I had the option of a 2836 clone or the DG2813. I went with the 2813 as it is closer to gen in BPH and to save 0. I have two different Rolex 5513 Submariner reps on the way, one vintage lume/meters first by JK, as well as one white lume/feet first by BP. I will probably end up gifting one of them. Right now I am only going off of QC photos for a cosmetic accuracy comparison; there will be individual reviews on both upon arrival.
The Rolex Submariner 5513 holds a significant place in Rolex Submariner history as a vintage no-date model featuring a movement that is not chronometer-certified. Released a few years after the reference 5512, it shares an almost identical appearance, with the primary difference being fewer lines of text on its dial.
